Grade 6 Study Topics
- Religion: Voyages (CPH) curriculum is used within our 6th grade. It is designed to teach children about the key concepts of faith, Law and Gospel, confession, repentance, forgiveness, and Grace.
- Reading: The reading of short stories, sections from classics and novels. Literary analysis, comprehension, and understanding are key components of these classes. The computer based Accelerated Reader Program guides student’s personal reading goals at levels appropriate to their skills.
- Writing: The six traits of good writing (voice, idea, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, and mechanics) are being introduced at this level. Vocabulary activities add synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and word definitions to the students’ arsenal of writing skills to help in their required writing assignment of a persuasive pro-life essay.
- Mathematics: 6th grade students focus on problem solving using several techniques. Basic operations are covered in algebraic form. Probability, rates, ratios, and geometry concepts are also covered.
- Computer: 6th grade includes a typing tutorial emphasizing keyboarding skills as well as developing powerpoint projects, photostories, importing pictures and developing a video.
- Geography/U.S. History/World Cultures: 6th grade students focus on the physical and cultural geography of the world.
- Science: 6th grade the students work on Life Science and Physical Science.
- Music/Choir: Each grade has one music period a week where they explore listening and analyzing, notation rhythm, moving to music, playing instruments. In choir students learn to perform in a variety of settings.
- Art: 6th grade art includes understanding line and use of line designs, perspective drawings. Color is taught in terms of warm/cool and the color wheel. Various mediums are used to create works of art such as: water color, charcoal, tempra paint, paper cutting and tearing techniques.
- Physical Education: The focus is on team games that introduce students to different sport and life-long activities. Fitness is stressed daily.
