Grade 5 Study Topics

  • Religion: Students discover God’s desires for his children through scripture.  Law and Gospel are explained throughout the Bible stories that are studied.  Students recognize God’s plan for salvation and learn how to share their faith with others.  Memorization of scripture is an important part of their learning.

  • Reading: Students apply reading skills toward higher levels of understanding.  Among the strategies and skills that are emphasized are identification of main idea, making predictions and inferences, drawing conclusions, comparing and contrasting, and clarifying information.  Awareness that setting, characters, and plot are parts of a story is more fully developed.  Vocabulary development continues to be a priority as well.  Students work in groups and independently with a variety of genre.  Projects are generated as an extension of their reading.  The Accelerated Reader program is used to enhance reading growth.
  • Language: Grammar, writing, and spelling are all parts of the language program.  Parts of speech, proper sentence structure, and correct mechanics of grammar are developed.  Creative writing is used to enhance the student’s ability to express ideas in a variety of written forms.  Orderliness, neatness, and self-evaluation are all a part of this instruction.

  • Mathematics: Problem solving through the fundamentals of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are emphasized.  Concepts involving fractions, decimals, and percentage are taught hand-in-hand to show their interrelationship.  Geometry and algebraic concepts are introduced at this level.

  • Social Studies: The development of the United States as a country is the main emphasis.  Students discover the value of relationships with other world cultures from the past to the present.  Map skills are developed.  Projects and research are used to increase awareness and understanding.

  • Science: Awareness and appreciation of God’s creation is developed as hands-on activities and demonstrations are used to foster curiosity.  Through use of the scientific method, experiments and projects help to increase knowledge and understanding of scientific principles.  Students participate in an annual Science Fair by presenting independent or group projects.

  • Computer: Keyboarding skills through use of a typing tutorial are taught.  The Internet is used for searches and as a tool for research.

  • Art/ P.E./Music/Choir: Creativity and the aesthetics of art are explored through many types of medium and art forms.  Expression of strength, agility, stamina, and quickness are stressed as students develop skills in physical education.  Listening to, and moving with, music to enhance appreciation and vocal talents are provided in music and choir.
