Grade 4 Study Topics
Religion: Using the Bible students recognize we are all forgiven people. Bible Study includes the Israelites, Moses, Paul, and Jesus as
healer, preacher, and redeemer. Memory work is an integral part of the class.
- Reading: The Accelerated Reader program continues at this level with computer generated reading levels and comprehension tests. Comprehension and vocabulary lessons teach important skills that go along with quality literature selections. Other skill and strategy instruction is taught to build independence in reading.
- Language: Study of the parts of speech and sentence structure is integrated with a host of writing activities over a broad range of styles including narratives, letters, stories, descriptive and reports.
- Spelling/Handwriting: Weekly lessons and tests help students learn specific spelling rules and related writing skills. Handwriting practice aims to improve cursive legibility.
- Mathematics: The mastery of the four basic groups of math facts is stressed. Also studied are place value, data and probability, time and measurement, fractions, decimals, and geometry. Logic and problem solving are emphasized in every unit. Many hands-on games are used to help accomplish these skills.
- Social Studies: Students study the culture, historical, and geographical features of five regions of the United States. Various reports and projects are used as a part of the learning method.
- Science/Health: Hands-on experiments and projects are used in the study of life processes, body systems, the ocean, ecosystems, motion, and electricity. Health class focuses on God’s magnificent creation, the human body, and how to stay healthy and safe.
- Computer: The students continue to become familiar with the keyboard. They work with the program “Word.” Some work on the Internet is also taught.
- Art/Music/P.E./Choir: As in other grades, a variety of mediums are used in Art. Music and choir continue to expand student awareness and understanding of musical notation, rhythms, styles, and purpose. Physical activity explores group games, personal physical fitness, and sportsmanship.
