  • Phonics: Students work through decoding processes which provide clues, that supported by context, lead them to word recognition. Rhyming, synonyms, antonyms, blends, contractions, prefixes and suffixes are some of the areas introduced.
  • Language: Concentration on writing complete sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation is the focus. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives are used to build sentence structure.
  • Handwriting: After reviewing manuscript letters the first quarter of the year, students are introduced to cursive handwriting for the remainder of the year.
  • Mathematics: Second graders become proficient in addition and subtraction facts, regrouping, working with fractions, and the introduction to multiplication 0-5.
  • Social Studies: The focus is on people in their communities and neighborhoods. Life in suburbs, urban, and rural areas is compared and contrasted. Major landforms are studied.
  • Science: Students learn to stay healthy through diet and cleanliness. Units on the weather, space, matter, energy, homes and habitats, earth science, and living things are explored.
  • Computer: Second graders begin to learn basic word processing. They continue to utilize the computer as a learning tool.
  • Art/Music/P.E./Choir: Study of the Masters and incorporating elements of design are the focus of art. Music integrates the study of rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form and expressive qualities. P.E. includes movement exploration and basic skill development with simple gym equipment.
